Finding Your Own Motivation: Moving Beyond Motivational Speakers and Self-Help Books

To begin, motivation is an inner process fueled by our personal values, beliefs, and wants. It comes from within ourselves, and external sources such as motivational speakers or self-help books can only provide short-term boosts to our motivation. In other words, they can inspire us and bring new insights, but they cannot provide long-term motivation if we lack the inner will to achieve our goals.

Secondly, motivation is a multifaceted process including a variety of psychological components such as self-efficacy, self-esteem, and goal setting. While motivational speakers and self-help books can provide insights into these aspects, their counsel cannot be tailored to our own circumstances and requirements. For instance, what motivates one individual may not motivate another. As a result, rather than relying exclusively on external sources of inspiration, we must cultivate our own self-awareness and understanding of what motivates us.

When we rely on external sources of inspiration too much, we risk becoming reliant on them for our feeling of purpose and direction. This can be difficult because external sources are frequently transient and might vanish at any time, leaving us feeling adrift or demotivated. Intrinsic motivation, on the other hand, is self-sustaining and can give us with a firm basis on which to develop our objectives and desires.

Intrinsic motivation is also linked to our general happiness and well-being. When we pursue goals that are in line with our personal beliefs and passions, we feel a sense of fulfilment and purpose that transcends accomplishment or achievement. This is because intrinsic motivation is about doing things that are meaningful and enjoyable to us rather than getting external benefits. Finally, by establishing our own intrinsic motivation, we may construct a life that is both successful and satisfying, rather than simply chasing after external success markers that may or may not eventually offer us happiness.

Finally, motivation is more than just feeling good or optimistic. It's about taking action and moving forward with our goals even when we don't feel like it. While motivational speakers and self-help books might motivate us to act, it is up to us to build the discipline, resilience, and tenacity to see our goals through. In other words, motivation is a set of behaviors that must be developed over time by persistent effort and practise.
